NASA has identified asteroid 2024 YR4 as a prime candidate
for exploration due to its regular close approaches to Earth every four years.
This Apollo-type near-Earth asteroid, with an estimated diameter of 40 to 90
meters, poses no significant threat to Earth but offers a unique opportunity
for scientific study. Researchers suggest that fly-by missions are highly
feasible, with launch windows appearing nearly every year, and a 2028 mission
could reach the asteroid within months. More complex missions, such as
replicating NASA’s DART experiment, could also be conducted to study deflection
techniques, enhancing planetary defense capabilities. This asteroid provides
invaluable insights into near-Earth objects and their behavior.
